The National Institutes of Health Biomedical Information Science and Technology Initiative defines bioinformatics as research, development, or application of computational tools and approaches for expanding the use of biological, medical, behavioral or health data, including those to acquire, store, organize, archive, analyze, or visualize such data. The University of Missouri Bioinformatics Consortium formed to facilitate inter-campus communication and bioinformatics research collaboration. It supports not only the Life Sciences Center but life sciences endeavors across the UM System. http://umbc.rnet.missouri.edu/background.html
